June 18 in San Antonio history…

Kids tuned into the one hour broadcast of “Disneyland” at 8:00 on KENS Channel 5 to hear about Walt Disney’s new amusement park with the same name that opened yesterday.  The grand opening was broadcast live on the ABC television network but no one in San Antonio got to see it.  There is no ABC-affiliated station in San Antonio.

The San Antonio Charros, one of six teams in the newly-formed American Football Association, begin playing today when they host Oklahoma City in an exhibition game at Harlandale’s Memorial Stadium.  (The Charros lost, 28-24.)

The 66-year-old Elks Building at Navarro and Pecan streets becomes the first building to be imploded in San Antonio. The building was the former home of the Travis Club and was immortalized on the boxes for Travis Club cigars.
