January 8 in San Antonio history…
The Business and Professional Women’s Club of San Antonio will demonstrate the operation of a voting machine at the monthly luncheon meeting of the Presidents’ Council in the Gunter Hotel at 12:35 p. m. today. The voting machine demonstration is part of a 10-year program of the business women’s organization aiming toward installation of voting machines in Bexar County. The demonstration will be under the direction of Mrs. Pauline Fowler, president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
The city’s application for an $18 million federal grant for the Vista Verde South revitalization project on the near West Side is approved.
The legendary Eastwood Country Club on San Antonio’s East Side is destroyed by fire. Eastwood hosted many legendary performers through the years, such as Etta James, the Drifters, Bo Diddley, Bobby Blue Bland, Fats Domino, Bill Doggett, Jimmy Reed, Ike and Tina Turner and, of course, Miss Wiggles.
