November 12 in San Antonio history…

World War I – 1915
The Stinson School of Flying, the first flight school operated by a woman, is opened by Emma Beaver Stinson.  Its heritage lives on in the current airport code for Stinson Airport, SSF.

The Vance House is opened as a hotel (right).  It was the military headquarters before, and some years after, the Civil War.  Its location is now the Gunter Hotel.

Barbara Bush, wife of Vice-President George H. W. Bush, visits San Antonio to promote reading and also to honor Lupe Anguiano, founder of ational Women’s Employment and Education, Inc.  She begins her visit by handing out free books to 715 students at Smith Elementary School.
