January 17 in San Antonio history…

The Floresville Chronicle reports that Col. Brackenridge of San Antonio, president of the waterworks plant, wants the city to contract the present rate of water for the next 25 years, at the end of which the city should own the entire business.

Referring to tuberculosis as “San Antonio’s Public Enemy Number One”, Mayor Maury Maverick announced today that the city will join the intensive campaign to eradicate the much dreaded disease.

The bronze statue of St. Anthony de Padua, a gift from Portugal during Hemisfair, was found facedown on a concrete slab covered with pieces of a vandalized wooden crate.  One spokesman for the city said it would be “about six to eight weeks” before the new foundation for the statue is ready on a grassy knoll near the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce building.
