September 23 in San Antonio history…

Bexar County deputy sheriff Frank Ackerman dies after being shot three days earlier when answering an emergency call from a hotel manager. Ackerman and special deputy, Lennis Brice, went to the I. & G.N. Hotel on Medina Street. Ackerman went in the back door after telling Brice to wait outside. Brice waited with his ear to the door and heard the drawling voice of Ackerman command: “Don’t do that. Don’t do that, fellow.” Immediately there was a volley of nine pistol shots and Brice ran up the stairs to find Ackerman and his assailant gravely wounded.
