Ladies of the Alamo Monument Association are mortified to find that they have fixed upon the first day of Lent as the date of the Fidelia concert for a benefit.  The opera house has already been engaged.

Hundreds of San Antonians motored to Boerne to see fields covered with a 5-inch blanket of snow.

“It’s A Wonderful Life” debuts at the Majestic Theater, two months and six days after its national premiere.

1969
Jose Antonio Navarro was honored on the 174th anniversary of his birth, beginning with a Requiem Mass in San Fernando Cathedral where he worshipped. Mayor McAllister proclaimed the day “Jose Antonio Navarro Day” in the mayor’s office. Governor Preston Smith declared this week “Jose Antonio Navarro Week” in a proclamation which was presented at a noon reception by former Texas Secretary of State Roy Barrera.

The topmost section of the hotel at the corner of St. Mary’s and Houston (The Gunter) has been finished today by workmen.

1929
Work on the zoological gardens was started today and will included three bear pens and a monkey island.

1949
Rumors of hidden treasure added zest today to the razing of the old adobe Irish flats at school board headquarters.

Judson Bros. have gotten a flowing well for the waterworks company at the lower pumphouse near River Ave.  It flows 3 million gallons a day.

1981
Christopher Cross, with lead singer Chris Geppert of San Antonio, becomes first artist to win all four General Field Grammy awards in one night: Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year.  They win one more Grammy for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).

February 24 in San Antonio history…

The Texians in the Alamo are summoned by Santa Anna to surrender.  He is answered with a cannon shot.

1909
A permit for construction of a third and fourth story to Joske Bros. to cost $30,000 was issued today.

1959
Galveston has moved to try to head off establishment of a third medical branch of the University of Texas in San Antonio.

The Beethoven Maennerchor (German singing society) is organized.

Work on an Edison electric system for San Antonio will soon begin, it has been rumored. Seeing is believing.

1939
Sheriff Will Wood’s edict banning the wearing of boots by his men has met with a wide variance of opinion.

1968
The River Walk Lodge, in the old Casino Building at 102 W. Crockett, is scheduled to open April 1 as the city’s newest youth hostelry.  The six-story building will cater primarily to high school and college-age youths as a low-rent hotel.

Santa Anna‘s advance troops arrive in San Antonio.

1889
The San Antonio City Brewery will shortly put on the market their excellent XXX Pearl beer.  Orders are in already for the first output.

1944
A San Antonian waited in line two hours at the Federal Building to pay his income tax but balked when a seaman attemped to fingerprint him and enlist him in the Navy. He was in the wrong line.

1957
Old 794 was offically handed over to the city.  The last of Southern Pacific’s steam locomotives will be a permanent display at Maverick Park. (It will remain there until 1999, when it was moved to Sunset Station. – Ed.)

Colonel Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment arrives at San Antonio to take charge of the Department of Texas.

1909
Alderman Lockwood objects to the suggestion that Avenue C and River Avenue be changed to Broadway.

1967
“Hemisfair in the Sun”, a song composed by San Antonian Ruth Bingaman Smith and adopted by the Woman’s Pavilion for Hemisfair, is performed for the first time at a Symphony Pops Concert in Villita Assembly Hall.

February 20 in San Antonio history…

1930
Listing items to be including in the new municipal bond issue, Mayor C.M. Chambers announced today that $75,000 for an old trail driver’s monument on Auditorium Plaza would be submitted to voters for approval.

1962
The San Antonio Light (right) proudly trumpeted the news that John Glenn had become the first American to orbit the earth.

1988
RiverCenter Mall holds its grand opening festivies.
